Juan Darwin, 21 years old, from Maningrida in Arnhem Land. This area is access by permit only issued by the Indigenous run Northern Land Council. Maningrida is not accessible by road during the wet season. At least 10 different languages are spoken in this area. Juan is a natural leader and captain of the local Baru football team. Juan has a 4 year old son, Tyson, and shares a house with his wife, three brothers, two sisters and two uncles. Juan would love to find employment, however opportunities in Maningrida are very limited.

Bridgette Williams, 29 years old from Mt. Gravatt, Brisbane. Bridgette is a keen sportswoman and is actively involved in many sporting groups and organisations. While an undergrad she chaired an Indigenous student committee (Barunga Centre). Bridgette currently works at Griffith University in the Indigenous Centre and acts as liaison between students and Indigenous Elders. Bridgette aims to create new pathways for students. Bridgette wanted to be on the team last year and is ecstatic that the project has expanded to include females this year. She beleives that life goes by so quickly that you need to get involved. She is also motivated by her Indigenous heritage and would like to put back into the community and highlight existing health issues.

Michael Purcell, 17 years old from Charleville. Michael has a history of running and made state level for 3,000m. He also enjoys playing rugby league and touch football. Michael loves to run and push himself, he feels as if he has been given a second chance after a chronic illness in 2010, and now makes the most of every opportunity. Michael suffered a life threatening kidney disease which he contracted playing rugby league for his school and was a direct result of the flooding to the area. He spent a lot of time commuting to Toowoomba for treatment (dialysis) but has gained back his full strength and is now very active. Michael was very impressive at the try outs and has a natural ability which we hope to foster and develop.

Kelsey wants to be involved in the project to have an effect on the people of Palm Island and to make her family proud.

Bianca Graham, 28 years old from Weipa, far north Queensland. Bianca recently ran a half marathon around the small town of Weipa. She and a running partner trained hard for the months leading up to the run, and rose before the sun to complete the 21km’s before it got too hot. Bianca keeps fit by running and going to the gym, she has her sights set on the gold coast half marathon. Bianca wants to represent her local area and show others what they need to do to lead a healthy life. Bianca grew up in Weipa and went to boarding school in Townsville. She studied Business Marketing at Brisbane University is very committed to running and a healthy lifestyle.

Arain Pearson, 28 years old from Yirrkala, Arnhem Land. Arian grew up in Yirrkala and attended boarding school in Darwin. He was trained by Cathy Freeman at school. He has represented NT for touch football 6 years in a row. Arian is a teachers assistant from Yirrkala and is a very calm and collected guy. His family runs a cultural experience business called Bawaka. He spends his spare time spear fishing and swimming. He is part of a band that may be touring Japan in late November. Arian is the Surf Life Saving vice president in Yirrkala and has his bronze medallion. Arian heard about the project last year and wants to be involved to make his community proud.

Beth Ali, 18 years old from Maningrida, East Arnhem Land. Beth is a great basketballer and has recently started running in Maningrida with local mentor Gerry to get her fit for the project. Maningrida is not accessible by road in the wet season and local runners have to contend with the town dogs. Beth wants to push herself and encourage other kids and adults to strive to be different. Beth is fortunate enough to be in the same community as Juan Darwin from 2010, who will be her running support and motivator as he tackled similar challenges last year.
