New York Team Announced

In less than a month’s time 7 Indigenous men and 4 women will head to New York City to participate in the world’s most famous foot race – The New York City Marathon.

The team gathered for one last camp in Alice Springs last week and completed final components of their Certificate III in Community Recreation (Indigenous Healthy Lifestyle) along with the 30km test event on Saturday morning.

Everyone must be commended on their dedication to finishing the Certificate III as their days are spent indoors studying and when they’re not studying they’re running. On Friday a community fun run and BBQ was held at Araluen Arts Centre which gave the runners a chance to put their text book knowledge into practical experience. Approximately 50 local men, women and a bunch of children participated in the small fun run and were rewarded with a free sausage sizzle put on by the Alice Springs APEX Club and Town Council.

Saturday the 1st of October the team were shuttled several km’s out of town to Flynn’s grave where they met some local volunteers who were eager to assist. They set off on their 30km run before the sun and quickly formed small groups or aligned with a running buddy.

Rob and the team were on course to provide refreshments and encouragement as they all pushed themselves to the limit.

Patrick and Reggie made it back to the hotel first with Michael and Kiwa not far behind. Nadine and Bianca missed the yellow arrow to turn off and thankfully were spotted heading 3km’s in the wrong direction and were scooped up at 33km’s and bought to the finish.

That evening was both exciting and sad as photos of great times clicked through on the projector. Rob and Tim announced the team that are bound for New York at the start of November and the team that will run in one of Rob’s most cherished events the Boston Marathon in April 2012.
