Deadly Champions announced

Eight communities, more than 50 runners, and the winners were……..!

Gapuwiyak, a remote Northern Territory community represented by only four runners aged between 12 and 18, was crowned the 2014 Deadly Fun Run Champions snatching the title from defending champions, the Murraylands, who came in at third position.

In second place, represented by just two runners was Thursday Island, located in the Torres Strait off Far North Queensland.

Juniors took on a 3km course, while the seniors completed 5km to battle it out for individual honours.

Overall winners in the junior girls 3km category were:

1st:      Skyeisha Rigney from the Murraylands in a time 13:59.

2nd:     Faith Kempster from Mossman in a time of 17:14

3rd:     Nikisha Swan from Mutitjulu in a time of 17:16

Overall winners in the junior boys 3km category were:

1st:     David Neller from Mossman in a time of 16:47

2nd:    Kunmanara Okai from Mutitjulu in a time of 16:50.

3rd:     George Gallagher from Utju in a time of 16.53

Overall winners of the senior women’s, 5km category, was:

1st:      Rachel Baker from Galiwinku in a time of 28:37

2nd:     Alicia Sabatino from Thursday Island in 28:59

3rd:      Hannah Gondarra also representing Galiwinku, in a time of 29:55.

Overall winners of the senior men’s, 5km category, were:

1st:      Chris Guyula from Gapuwiyak in a time of 22:12

2nd:     Thaine Mills from Thursday Island in a time of 25:05

3rd:      Daniel Lloyd from the Murraylands in a time of 25:36

The calibre of runners was so high that an additional youth category was added for those runners aged 15-18 who finished the 5km course.  

Overall winners of the youth female 5km category were:

1st:      Jody Wunungmurra from Gapuwiyak in a time of 32:34

2nd:     Jacinta Gurruwiwi from Galiwinku finishing in a time of 45:18.

Overall winners of the youth male 5km category were:

1st:      Luke Gurruwiwi from Gapuwiyak in a time of 22:33

2nd:     Reece Knitschke representing the Murraylands in a time of 24.34

3rd:     Malachai Gurralpo’s time of 28:46 rounding out the top three positions.
