What began as an idea to unearth an Indigenous Australian long distance runner to rival the African dominance of the sport has developed into a life-changing program, creating inspirational Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island men and women across the country.
The Indigenous Marathon Project was established to use running to drive change, instil self-belief, self-worth and self-confidence, by training and mentoring a group of Indigenous Australians aged 18-30 to run the world’s biggest marathon – the New York City Marathon.
In the last five years, 43 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island men and women have personified dedication, resilience and sheer determination to overcome considerable adversity to achieve goals they never thought possible.
They have returned to their communities as inspirational role models who have had a significant impact and continue to drive change, through establishing their own fitness groups, running groups and continually promoting the benefits of living an active and healthy lifestyle.
The impact they are having has expanded and extends far beyond the New York City Marathon to include additional programs including the Deadly Fun Run Series and Indigenous Communities for Activity and Nutrition (I-CAN).
The growth and expansion created by our Graduates, along with our dedicated and passionate supporters and sponsors, has provided the opportunity for us to rebrand to best represent the entirety of what our organisation offers and as such we are very excited to announce our new name- the Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF)!
We believe this new name sets the future direction and best represents the suite of programs currently being offered, and allows for even more growth into the future.
The process of updating the website and email addresses is underway and we ask for your patience during this time. All staff can be contacted on their current @imp addresses until further notice.
We would like to thank our Graduates, supporters, and sponsors for your ongoing support of IMF – it is your support that will ensure we continue to provide life-changing pathways and opportunity for Indigenous Australians.
The change they are initiating and creating is unquestionable. They are leaving footprints on more than just the marathon; they are inspiring a nation.
IMF is a not-for-profit charity with DGR status. With the end of the financial year fast approaching, if you would like to make a fully tax deductible donation, and contribute to the organisation’s long-term sustainability, please click here
